The International Association of Civil Engineering Students (IACES) was founded in 1989, when students from various European countries gathered in the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands, for the first Academic Congress of Civil Engineering Students (ACCESS). The initial goals were the following: to promote the cooperation and the exchange of ideas between civil engineering students, as well as to create new contacts across Europe.

Since its founding, more than fifty Local Committees (LCs) have been established across Europe, Asia,  Africa and America.

Each year, besides the events organized by the LCs, there are two annual meetings, the Academic Congress of Civil Engineering Students (ACCESS) which is usually held in October and the Mid-Term Meeting (MTM) which generally takes place in May. They are organized by different LCs each year.

2017 was a real milestone for us, because the first partnership with the National Association of Civil Engineering Students (Asociación Nacional de Estudiantes de Ingeniería Civil -ANEIC) was signed, meaning that 56 mexican universities joined us as one LC.

Afterwards another partnership followed, with the Latinamerican Association of Civil Engineering Students (Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudiantes de Ingeniería Civil-ANEIC), connecting IACES with Central and Latin America and, creating a global platform for the aims and values of IACES to flourish.

More recently, 2019 was a breakthrough year, as the first-ever International Civil Engineering Competition (ICEC) took place at the University of Porto. The event proved to be a promising and successful addition to our main events, Academic Congress of Civil Engineering Students (ACCESS) and Mid-Term Meeting (MTM).

In 2019, IACES celebrated its 30th anniversary. For this special occasion the new generation of members together with our alumni members participated in the ACCESS’19, which was organized by LC Timișoara, in Romania.
